A LIVE PERFORMANCE WAS HAD!!! Beyond grateful to our gracious host, Ramani, who opened her backyard oasis to us for a fundraiser concert for Calliope's Call. My brillant collaborator for the afternoon was none other than Julia Carey, who is a dream to sing with! Special thanks to Dave for providing all the equipment for us to have a successful and stress-free outdoor recital!
This weekend I have the honor of not only singing with Julia, but playing violin with her for a special service at Central Square Congregational Church. We’ll be sharing an achingly beautiful piece I commissioned by DelShawn Taylor for violin and piano entitled “And God Wept” alongside an incredible arrangement of the hymn “Just as I Am” by Harold Mims. Evan Leontis and I will also sing two pieces by rockstar composer Shawn E. Okpebholo: “Be Still My Soul” and “How long?” (Psalm 13).

This Sunday at 10am, the Central Square Congregational Church will be visited by Megan Roth and Evan Leontis, the directors of the Boston-based art song organization Calliope’s Call. Megan (who is a violinist in addition to being a mezzo-soprano) will premiere this gorgeous and moving work written especially for our church by composer DelShawn Taylor. Del’Shawn says of his inspiration:
“In my mind this composition is the backdrop to Juneteenth celebrations as God watches from on high. Seeing both past, present, and future, he weeps tears of joy and great sorrow for the many mountains of systemic oppression the African American people must climb and the many valleys of ill fated promises and corrosive racism. Here we are over a hundred years later, legally free, but still fighting to be free from racism, police brutality, and systemic oppression.”
Calliope’s Call will continue its partnership with our church, as we will be recording the upcoming concert series “I, Too, Sing America” in our church, featuring the singers MaKayla M. McDonald, Charles Williamson, and Dana Whiteside, streamed online beginning on July 4th (https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/5130644).
